Dig Deeper Activity Descriptions
Wildcat Sports Center
Overview
What's wrong with our team? Why do the Wildcats always beat us? Could it be their training program? You find out that there actually is a method to their madness. Anna, who works with Coach Carver at the Wildcat Sports Center at Independence High, guides you through the Wildcat's training program. Their secret? Not letting their athletes smoke at all.
Bring your sweats, because Anna's tour is more than a lazy bus ride. She puts her stop watch on you and counts your breaths as your work your way through a series of exercises. A computer program graphs your results and even compares you to other athletes. Maybe you're not quite gold-medal material. But Anna shows how even non-athletes like you can benefit from Coach Carver's anti-tobacco methods.
Along the way, an animated character named Oxy takes you on a totally different tour--one of the insides of your body. Travel with Oxy through the bronchial tubes, alveoli, and blood vessels in your body and see first-hand what it's like to be an oxygen molecule. Here's the science behind the sports--and the reason why smoking ends up hurting your lungs so much.
As you emerge from the depths of the lung and from Anna's tour, you'll gain a new perspective on sports medicine that you'll take back to the Dig Deeper newspaper. Write up your results for Dig Deeper so that teen athletes everywhere can benefit from this knowledge!
