Lesson Plans

We have collected a number of lesson plans that can be used on their own or in conjunction with one of the activities from the Dig Deeper CD. Each lesson plan has been grouped under its content area.

Social Studies

What's the message? An Advertising/Media Awareness Lesson
How do advertisers create ads that appeal to their intended audience? In this lesson, students will create posters using ads taken from magazines, analyzing the way these ads convey their message. (This complements the Slick Slogans Ad Agency activity on the Dig Deeper CD.)

Language Arts

What's so hard about saying no? Refusal Skills Role-Playing
In this groupwork activity, students will write, stage, and act-out a scene involving peer pressure and tobacco. (This complements the Bob's Comic Studio activity on the Dig Deeper CD.)

Science

How big is a breath? Lung Capacity
How does smoking really effect our lung capacity? In this hands-on lesson, students will measure their tidal volume lung capacity, gather their data together as a class, and discuss their results. (This complements the Wildcat Sports Center activity on the Dig Deeper CD.)

Math

What's in a number? Analyzing Smoking Statistics
In this lesson, students will create tables, bar graphs, and circle graphs illustrating statistics from the U.S. Census and the American Heart Association. (This complements the Research module and the Wilcat Sports Center activity on the Dig Deeper CD.)
