Dig Deeper Activity Descriptions
Bob's Comic Studio
Overview
Our cartoonist, Bob, needs your help! He's run out of ways to say, "No!," and he's got a refusal skills comic to finish immediately! Help give life to Bob's drawings by writing the dialogue for his comics. Along the way, you'll meet characters like Igor the Caveman, One-Time Fred, and Disappearing Darcy, who show you some good (and not-so-good) ways to say no to tobacco. Then, run through some sample dialogue with Bob on his other comic strips. What will happen if you call your best friend a drooly, stinky, teeth-rotting chew hound? Will the girl you like run away if you don't smoke with her friends? Where did that cloud of smoke in the school restroom come from?
For your final project, try your hand at finishing one of Bob's unfinished comics. Four black-and-white scenarios--Mirror Mirror, Console Conflict, Fetch This! and Bird Brain--await your artistic talents. This time, you don't have to follow Bob's lead: write your own dialogue in from scratch, and paint each panel from a palette of millions of colors. Show the readers of the Dig Deeper newspaper just how colorful (and effective) refusal skills can be!
Learning Objectives
- Upon completing the assignment students will be able to distinguish between effective and ineffective refusal strategies.
- Children will also be able to demonstrate how each of these refusal techniques can be expressed in social situations:
- when you refuse, use the word "no"
- reject the tobacco, not the person
- hold your ground and don't change your mind
- use a firm voice and strong body language
- walk away if you have to
- offer an alternative
- reverse the pressure
- After completing the activity, the learner will be able to describe, from memory, a majority of these techniques.
