Overview
Do you like to give advice? Then moonlight as Ann Cinders, advice columnist for the Dig Deeper news staff. Swamped with letters from teens all over the country, Ms. Cinders enlists your help in solving problems from teens faced with decision dilemmas.
Ann Cinders passes on the secrets of her patented advice-giving method: POGO, which stands for "Pause Options Goal Outcomes". As you POGO out of her office, you land in the cafeteria of Liberty High, where there are four teens lining up to talk to you. Do I keep taking piano lessons, or pick up the trumpet instead? Should I snitch on the guys who TP'ed my house? How can I get my best friend to stop smoking around me? Use POGO to get these teens to think about their decisions -- and to make the right one.
 Once you've mastered those situations, you're ready to graduate to head advice columnist! Ann Cinders' bulletin board is covered with letters she hasn't gotten around to answering. Conflicted Crush ... Boggled in Boise ... Woozy with Worry ... Choking on Chaw ... Help these four teens before they rush into the wrong decision!
Students will learn the skill of a four-part decision-making strategy. This will arm them with the ability to handle decisions which include the difficult subtexts of peer pressure, family pressure, risks versus rewards, and other underlying issues in risky behavior.
Learning Objectives
- Upon completing the activity the student will know the 4 words that the acronym POGO, a 4-part decision-making strategy, stands for: Pause before you decide, consider your Options, figure out your Goals, and anticipate possible Outcomes.
- The student will see the connection between the amount of thinking that goes into a decision and the outcome of the decision, based on the interviews conducted with the adolescents in the school cafeteria.
